The recently revived Clarion Music Society is considered to be one of the East Coast's leading period-instrument orchestras. Clarion was founded in 1957 by conductor and musicologist Newell Jenkins, first performing on modern instruments and shortly thereafter becoming the first orchestra in New York to lead a series of concerts on Baroque instruments. During Jenkins' 40 years at the helm, Clarion became known in particular for its thrilling performances of lesser-known 17th and 18th-century music, presenting more than 70 world premieres of lost, unpublished works from the Baroque, Classical, and early Romantic periods. In 2001, not long after the death of Newell Jenkins, Clarion's concert series went on hiatus until, in 2006, the Directors of Clarion selected Steven Fox to revive the series as Artistic Director and Conductor.
In his first two seasons, Mr. Fox has re-established Clarion as one
of the foremost Early Music groups in the United States. He has led the orchestra
and the Society's renowned choir in performances at Weill Recital Hall at
Carnegie Hall, the Morgan Library, the Aston Magna Festival, and St. Ignatius
Loyola in conjunction with the Sacred Music in a Sacred Space series. Under
Fox's direction, Clarion has received strong critical attention in The New York
Times, The New Yorker, BBC Music Magazine, Musical America, and the American
Record Guide. Clarion has also recently drawn international interest, having
been invited to give a series of concerts at London's acclaimed Kings Place
in the 2010-11 season as well as a concert tour in cities along the Rhine in
2010.
